In order to improve the accuracy of fuel gauging systems, Goodrich includes capacitance fuel characteristic sensors, commonly known as a compensators in the fuel gauging system. The sensor is comprised of multiple concentric metal tubes and accurately characterizes the fuel on board the aircraft. The compensator is typically mounted near the bottom of the tank so it will be covered with fuel until the tank is nearly empty. The compensator is a variable capacitor that senses changes in the dielectric constant of the fuel as a result of temperature and fuel type.
