Compensators

CompensatorIn order to improve the accuracy of fuel gauging systems, Goodrich includes capacitance fuel characteristic sensors, commonly known as a compensators in the fuel gauging system. The sensor is comprised of multiple concentric metal tubes and accurately characterizes the fuel on board the aircraft. The compensator is typically mounted near the bottom of the tank so it will be covered with fuel until the tank is nearly empty. The compensator is a variable capacitor that senses changes in the dielectric constant of the fuel as a result of temperature and fuel type.

The compensator is constructed from anodized aluminum tubes that are polyurethane coated to prevent water adhesion, fungus growth and corrosion. The gaps between the tubes are maintained by Teflon spacers mounted between the tubes. The longitudinal orientation of the tubes is maintained by spacers. The terminal block is a snap-on design affixed to the outer tube designed to control any stray capacitance in the terminal block and provide shielding between the tube connections. Mounting brackets are tailored to the installation and are designed to provide maximum flexibility at installation.
