Goodrich incorporates Splayed-Axis Piston Assemblies in many of its pumps because of the numerous advantages of this design as compared to conventional parallel-axis or straight-axis pumps.

• Larger diameter piston shoes, reducing piston shoe unit loading
• Low tangential flow velocities in the port area, made possible by the smaller diameter port end
• Reduced piston side loads because the force on the piston at greatest extension is axial; the angle is higher when the piston is well into the bore and well supported.
• The added piston shoe area available allows the design of a smaller unit for a given rated capacity while maintaining the same design loads
